ACROSS ASIA ON THE CHEAP (with “Bad News” supplement)
Lonely Planet, circa 1977, goes overland on the hashish trail in its third edition (hippified to “This edition” on publisher’s imprint page).
Page opposite imprint promises: “This book will not fail!”
By time of printing, Afghanistan was in a (reluctantly) Soviet aligned revolution; Iranian students were readying to expel the Shah and history. Meanwhile in England, Douglas Adams was penning “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,” a gently oblivious science fiction sendup of the Lonely Planet guidebooks from Australia.
The 70’s were finally over.
