HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC

The top image is a graphic appearing briefly on many records circa 1983 (ironically this specimen found on bootleg friendly collective PTV/Throbbing Gristle).

This bit of evidence is an oddly prescient anticipation of the music industry’s failures; I’ve never seen cassete tapes cited as the genises of that industry’s copyright collapse, but long before Napster and Megaupload, crappy cassetes were the bellwethers. (And what is a bellwether exactly? A castrated bell wearing goat that for some reason leads the flock.)

The famous cocaine kitsch Maxwell cassette tape advert gestures to the future of media consumption as the concert/dj/disco/radio antithesis: private, lonely, domesticly selfish, loud as you wanted.

And mind blowing.
