AUGUST SANDERS: CITIZENS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Well done MIT reprint of Gunther Sander’s poetic, tragic Citizens. The bravely dignified persons pictured are scrupulously identified and named by profession or credential: (Shorthand typist at savings bank; Wife of the painter Peter Abelen, National socialist). Failing credentials, the citizens are often crowed together and described by their precise placement of marginaliztion: (Children in a working class district of Cologne; Circus people in front of a tent; Persecuted Jewess).
